About

Dani Bown

Hi, I’m Dani & I’m the face behind UpholsterART.

I create individual, statement pieces of furniture that have been given new life with fresh upholstery, stylish textiles & beautiful embroidery designs.

My pieces can incorporate printing, paint effects, decoupage and other art techniques; they are truly unique and one of a kind.

My lifetime’s love has been creating, stitching, crafting, designing and always lots of vibrant colour.

Inspired creations are where I’m at.

AND you can sit on them!

My journey in upholstery

After post-graduate training as a Psychologist, I worked in mental health for a number of years before deciding upon a career change into the creative industries.

I’d always had a passion for textiles, printing and design; in particular using art forms I’d learned over the years (mainly through evening classes and art groups) to create my own fashion-wear, costumes, home furnishings & textile art.

In 2008 I bought my first embroidery sewing machine and, since that time, I’ve perfected my skills in digitising my own designs and creating beautiful embroidered art-works.

Living in Gay Street in the historic city of Bath for the past 24 years, has cultivated my love of traditional interiors. My step into the world of upholstery was a natural progression for my creativity, therefore, and ten years ago I joined an upholstery group and restored my first piece of antique furniture.

During this last decade of learning my craft, I worked in property management of luxury apartments in Georgian Bath. Redundancy, due to Covid, in April 2020 was a blessing in disguise. It meant I could focus more on my passion for interior design, restoration & upholstery.

Since my AMUSF training at the Oxford School of Upholstery - where I learned both traditional and modern upholstery skills - I worked within the industry for a short while at the Cotswold Bed Company on an apprenticeship. My desire to create my own style of embroidered upholstery, however, pushed me towards starting my own business; a bespoke service for clients who have a taste for the truly unique.
